REMEMBERING TIPAF LEADER MARY MASCOTT

On August 25, the 1000 Islands region lost one of its greatest arts advocates, Mary McDonald Mascott. Anyone who has enjoyed a performance at the exquisitely renovated Clayton Opera House should know that the nonprofit Thousand Islands Performing Arts Fund (TIPAF) at the Clayton Opera House as we experience it today exists because of the work of Mary Mascott.

In 2004, Mary led TIPAF's Centennial Campaign to Renovate the Clayton Opera House, which raised public and private funds totaling $3.25 million. Her hands-on approach to the renovation's oversight guided all aspects of the three-year process.

In 2007, Mary and Clayton Town Supervisor Robert Cantwell signed a renewed agreement between TIPAF and the town, ensuring that the opera house would be used as a performance hall and community center in perpetuity. That agreement has been renewed every five years since then. Because of the agreement, music, comedy, dance, theater and children's programming are presented year-round to entertain audiences and support the region's economy.

Mary was also instrumental in establishing TIPAF-specific support funds at the Northern New York Community Foundation, funds that are available to sustain the organization's work toward presenting the highest quality performing arts to a broad, diverse audience for years to come.

Mary will be greatly missed by all those who have served with her on TIPAF's Board of Directors, by current and past TIPAF staff members, as well as by TIPAF sponsors, Patrons, and anyone who was privileged to know her. What a thrilling legacy she has left!

Mary, thank you for the gift of live performances and a revitalized community.
